What Are Punctal Plugs?
Punctal plugs are tiny, biocompatible devices inserted in the inner corner of the eye, into the tear ducts (puncta) to help retain natural tears on the eye’s surface. They are a painless, non-surgical treatment for dry eye syndrome, providing long-lasting relief by reducing tear drainage and keeping the eyes hydrated.

How Are Punctal Plugs Used?
Punctal plugs are tiny devices typically used for patients with moderate to severe dry eye that hasn’t responded well to artificial tears or other treatments. During a quick, in-office procedure, your eye doctor will numb the eye with a topical anesthetic and insert the plugs into the tear ducts in the lower eyelids. This is a painless procedure that typically takes less than 5 minutes. There is no downtime associated with this visit. There are two main types of punctal plugs:
· Temporary (Dissolvable): Made from materials that dissolve over time, often used for trial purposes.
· Permanent: Long-lasting plugs made from silicone or other biocompatible materials for ongoing relief.
Results from Punctal Plugs
Patients often notice an improvement in dryness, irritation, and overall comfort shortly after the procedure. By helping tears stay on the eye’s surface longer, punctal plugs can enhance moisture, reduce the need for artificial tears, and improve symptoms like burning, grittiness, and redness. Results vary, but many patients experience significant relief from dry eye symptoms.
Patient Experience
The insertion process is quick, painless, and typically completed in just a few minutes. Patients can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure, with no downtime required. Most people describe the experience as comfortable, and the plugs are rarely felt once inserted. Follow-up appointments ensure the plugs are working effectively and address any concerns.
Punctal plugs inserted in the eyelids are a safe, painless, and effective option for managing dry eye symptoms and restoring comfort to your daily life. Contact MVS today to schedule a consultation and learn how punctal plugs can improve your vision and quality of life.
